How does a frog heal wounded skin without scarring?
When a Xenopus frog is deeply wounded, its skin can regenerate without scarring. Researchers have found that cells under the skin contribute to this regeneration after an excision injury.

Common antioxidant could slow symptoms of aging in human skin
New work suggests that a common, inexpensive and safe chemical could slow the aging of human skin. The researchers found evidence that the chemical -- an antioxidant called methylene blue -- could slow or reverse several well-known signs of aging when tested in cultured human skin cells and simulated skin tissue.

Molecule identified that helps give resident T cells in the skin their anti-cancer punch
The molecule CD103 is key to the long-term residence of T cells in the skin and to their potent anti-tumor response against melanoma

Skin stem cells used to generate new brain cells
Using human skin cells, University of California, Irvine neurobiologists and their colleagues have created a method to generate one of the principle cell types of the brain called microglia, which play a key role in preserving the function of neural networks and responding to injury and disease.

Solar-Powered Skin Opens New Possibilities for Prosthetics
A new way of harnessing the sun’s rays to power ‘synthetic skin’ could help to create advanced prosthetic limbs capable of returning the sense of touch to amputees.  Engineers from the University of Glasgow, who have previously developed an ‘electronic skin’ covering for prosthetic hands made from graphene, have found a way to use some of graphene’s remarkable physical properties to use energy from the sun to power the skin.

Wound healing: The stem cell dynamic

posted on
One of the key questions in biology is to identify how tissues are repaired after trauma and understand how stem cells migrate, proliferate, and differentiate to repair tissue damage. Researchers define, for the first time, the changes in the stem cell dynamics that contribute to wound healing.

Researchers dig up new molecular details on 'the other type' of stem cells
Scientists reveal that the combination of two molecular signals determines which cells that have already differentiated can regain their stem cell properties.

Popular stem cell techniques deemed safe; unlikely to pass on cancer-causing mutations
A new study shows that the act of creating pluripotent stem cells for clinical use is unlikely to pass on cancer-causing mutations to patients.
