Softening tumours before chemo improves pancreatic cancer survival
Australian cancer researchers have uncovered a promising new approach to treating pancreatic cancer by targeting the tissue around the tumour to make it ‘softer’ and more responsive to chemotherapy.

High doses of vitamin C to improve cancer treatment passes human safety trial
Clinical trials found that it is safe to regularly infuse brain and lung cancer patients with 800—1000 times the daily recommended amount of vitamin C as a potential strategy to improve outcomes of standard cancer treatments. In a work presented March 30, 2017 in Cancer Cell, University of Iowa researchers also show pathways by which altered iron metabolism in cancer cells, and not normal cells, lead to increased sensitivity to cancer cell death caused by high dose vitamin C.

Scientists discover mechanism that causes cancer cells to self-destruct
A new study reveals the role of three proteins in killing fast-duplicating cancer cells while they're dividing. The research finds that these proteins can be specifically modified to unleash an inherent 'death mechanism' that self-eradicates duplicating cancer cells.

The Hallmarks of Aging

The Hallmarks of Aging
Aging is characterized by a progressive loss of physiological integrity, leading to impaired function and increased vulnerability to death. This deterioration is the primary risk factor for major human pathologies, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. Aging research has experienced an unprecedented advance over recent years, particularly with the discovery that the rate of aging is controlled, at least to some extent, by genetic pathways and bioch...

Wound healing: The stem cell dynamic

posted on
One of the key questions in biology is to identify how tissues are repaired after trauma and understand how stem cells migrate, proliferate, and differentiate to repair tissue damage. Researchers define, for the first time, the changes in the stem cell dynamics that contribute to wound healing.

Researchers dig up new molecular details on 'the other type' of stem cells
Scientists reveal that the combination of two molecular signals determines which cells that have already differentiated can regain their stem cell properties.
